The approach of Ajaccio, on the last stage of the Mare e Monti Sud If you're walking the Mare e Monti Sud in the direction of Porticcio, this last stage is mostly a matter of descending. From Bisinao you first climb up to the point where the Mare e Monti Sud meets up with the Mare a Mare Centre, another long distance path on Corsica. So if you wanted to, you could connect these two hikes into one and not walk to Porticcio but to Col St. George (see stage 7 of the Mare a Mare Centre).

The Cyclames flowering everywhere in the Corsican forests But if you've decided to go to Porticcio, this is where you final descend begins. Prepare for landing! The path leads down towards the regional road D302, where you take a right and walk along the side of the road for half an hour. Be careful, there are a lot of cars and they drive like all people in the south of Europe: fast! Then you reach the a small village called Buselica and leave the main road again (at the left side of the road).

Approaching Ajaccio on a cold and wet April morning From here on, you'll often be able to see Porticcio, the Bay of Ajaccio and Ajaccio itself on the other side of the water. After about and hour and passing by an old ruined tower from the 15th century, you reach the outer limits of Porticcio. Your first impression will be monumental, because the path comes to a stop at the site of a huge cemetery.
